The Southern Oregon Coast

Bandon Dunes is many things — bucket list, pilgrimage, the answer to a golf argument that has been running since you first heard about it — but it is most essentially this: the best pure golf trip in North America, and the one that changes how you think about the game afterward. The wind is part of the point. So is the walking. So is the caddie telling you the truth about your lie.

When to go

Mid-July through September offers the calmest and most predictable conditions on the southern Oregon coast, with the most reliable stretch of mild, relatively dry weather. May and early June are playable but carry more variable weather and a shift in prevailing wind direction. Late September into October is a favored window among regulars — conditions remain strong and the summer crowds thin. The shoulder seasons of April and November offer meaningful discounts with the honest trade-off of more weather variability. Winter play is possible for the committed and the hardy.

The golf

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort operates six championship courses on the same property — a concentration of links architecture that does not exist elsewhere in North America. Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Old Macdonald, Bandon Trails, and Sheep Ranch each express a different interpretation of links golf, from the classic dune-rumpled routing of the original course to the exposed clifftop drama of Sheep Ranch. The short-course Preserve and the Punchbowl offer casual relief between championship rounds. The Bandon ethos — walking only, caddies strongly encouraged, no real estate, weather as an ingredient rather than an inconvenience — is as much a part of the experience as any individual hole. This is, emphatically, not a resort in the traditional sense.

The crew logistics

The resort is purpose-built for golf groups: on-site lodging ranges from lodge rooms to cottage rentals to house-scale accommodations for larger parties, all managed by the resort and oriented entirely toward the golf calendar. There is genuinely nothing else to do in Bandon — and that is the entire design. Groups of four to eight travel most naturally here; the four-day, three-night framework allows at least one round per course across the main five, with replay rates and the Preserve filling the remaining time. Walking fitness is a genuine consideration: budget the legs.
