The Lake Michigan Shore

In a small company town in Sheboygan County, a plumbing manufacturer decided to build world-class golf, and the result is the kind of quiet triumph that makes sense only in retrospect. Whistling Straits rises from the Lake Michigan shoreline looking like something transplanted from the coast of County Clare, and the shock of encountering it — here, in Wisconsin — is part of the experience in a way that no amount of preparation eliminates.

When to go

The golf season at Kohler runs from approximately late April through late October, with peak conditions from June through September. Wisconsin summers are warm with long daylight hours, and the Lake Michigan shoreline generates its own microclimate that can feel meaningfully different from conditions at the inland courses even on the same day. There is no winter golf at Kohler — the courses close seasonally — so the operating window is defined and should be planned around accordingly.

The golf

Kohler's four Pete Dye designs split across two properties. Whistling Straits' Straits Course is the flagship: a links-style routing along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, built on a former military airfield, that has hosted multiple PGA Championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup. It is demanding, exposed to lake wind on every hole, and mandatory walking — caddies are available and strongly recommended. The Irish Course at Whistling Straits offers an inland companion with rugged mounding and its own distinct character. At Blackwolf Run, adjacent to The American Club hotel in the village of Kohler, the River Course threads through Sheboygan River woodlands in a style that contrasts entirely with the lakeside exposure of the Straits; the Meadow Valleys Course provides a more accessible fourth option. A serious Kohler trip earns all four.

The crew logistics

The American Club, a Forbes five-star hotel in the village of Kohler, is the natural lodging base and provides convenient access to Blackwolf Run while offering shuttle arrangements to Whistling Straits. The property is genuinely destination-caliber — dining, spa, and the overall resort infrastructure justify the rate. Groups of four to eight fit the destination well; the four-course structure and multi-day itinerary are purpose-built for groups who want a sequenced, deliberate golf experience. Sheboygan proper offers additional lodging and dining for those who want to range off the resort.
