Glacier Country

Glacier National Park is the Rocky Mountains at their most Alpine and most urgent: over 700 miles of trail through a landscape of turquoise lakes, ancient cirques, and peaks that the glaciers are still actively shaping — slower now than they were, which is the troubling fact underneath the beauty. Come while the ice is still there to read.

When to go

Late August through mid-September is the consensus finest window: Going-to-the-Sun Road is open for its full length, high-country trails are clear, wildfire smoke has typically cleared from its August peak, and crowds drop sharply after Labor Day without the services closures that arrive in October. July and August offer maximum access and full visitor services but peak crowds and potential smoke haze. October brings stunning western larch color — the only deciduous conifer in the park — and uncrowded conditions, but road closures arrive by mid-month and require flexibility. Spring hiking is limited to lower elevations until high-elevation trails clear, usually late June.

The park

Going-to-the-Sun Road is Glacier's defining infrastructure: a 50-mile engineering achievement that crests Logan Pass at 6,646 feet and delivers views of the Continental Divide, hanging glaciers, mountain goats on the Garden Wall, and Hidden Lake visible from the Logan Pass visitor center parking lot. The Many Glacier valley on the park's east side is its finest hiking terrain — Grinnell Glacier, Iceberg Lake, and Ptarmigan Tunnel all originate from this single trailhead cluster, and the wildlife concentration here is exceptional. The west side along Lake McDonald is gentler: forest hiking, old-growth cedar, and the deep green quiet of the Going-to-the-Sun corridor before the road climbs above treeline. The Two Medicine valley in the park's southeast is the quietest developed area and one of the most scenic.

The crew logistics

West Glacier and Apgar on the park's west entrance are the primary base for most visitors, with lodging from the historic timber lodge on Lake McDonald to campgrounds, and the town of Whitefish providing full-service accommodation twenty miles north. East Glacier and Saint Mary serve the east side. For groups, rental cabins in the Flathead Valley near Whitefish offer the best space-to-proximity ratio. Vehicle reservations for the Sun Road ticketing system have been in effect during peak season — check the park website for the current year's requirements before driving through.
