Acadia

Acadia is the North Atlantic coast doing its finest work: pink granite dropping directly into the sea, carriage roads winding through birch forests, and summit views that put the ocean and the mountains in the same frame. It is the most northeastern national park in the lower 48, and it is unapologetically the best.

When to go

The last week of September through the third week of October is the consensus finest window: fall color peaks on Mount Desert Island around mid-to-late October, temperatures are comfortable for hiking in the upper 50s and 60s, crowds have eased from their summer peak, and the September-October light is genuinely photographic. September after Labor Day is the strategic play for anyone wanting good weather, functioning facilities, and the ability to park a car. Summer delivers excellent hiking weather and the only real ocean swimming temperatures, but requires early starts and shuttle reliance. The first half of May offers value and quiet at the cost of black flies on inland trails.

The park

Cadillac Mountain, at 1,529 feet the highest point on the eastern seaboard, is the first place in the continental United States to see sunrise for a portion of the year — a fact the park takes seriously enough to require parking reservations at dawn. The carriage roads, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in the early twentieth century, form a 45-mile network of broken-stone paths through the forested interior, open to hiking and biking but closed to vehicles — one of the most elegant trail systems in the national park network. The Precipice Trail and the Beehive offer ladder-assisted scramble hikes with Atlantic views that make the effort feel proportionate. Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse on the island's southwest corner delivers the postcard shot. The Schoodic Peninsula on the mainland side is Acadia's quietest and most-overlooked unit.

The crew logistics

Bar Harbor is the island's main town and provides lodging from historic inns to vacation rentals, supplemented by campgrounds including Blackwoods and Seawall within the park boundary. October foliage weekends push lodging to its seasonal limits — book three to four months ahead for October weekday stays. The fare-free Island Explorer bus network runs June through mid-October and covers most major trailheads; building a trip around it removes the parking frustration entirely.
